The week has flown by!

Today was our last full day in Guatemala and it feels like we just got here! We will be heading back to Atlanta tomorrow afternoon filled with many great stories to share when we get home. Check back for more pictures of the week that will be added once we get back to Georgia.

Work Day #4

Yesterday we finished our work on the house! We presented the family with their key along with some groceries and decorations for their new home. It was an amazing experience!

Work Day #3

Today we started our house construction! Despite some rain and hail after lunch, we were able to complete more than half of the house with the help of several men who work for the city and the family.

Work Day #2

Tuesday morning we went back to Iglesia Del Camino to continue working on church renovation projects. We painted three rooms in a building that they have not been able to use since they moved into their new space in January. They were very excited to have this completed and be one step closer to being able to use the space!

In the afternoon the group split up and went to an orphanage in San Lucas, which is about halfway between Antigua and Guatemala City and visited a transition home in Antigua for girls that have just come out of an orphanage at the age of 18. Both groups had a wonderful time!

Work Day #1

Our schedule for the week has changed a little bit due to some delays in the foundation preparation for the house, but we still had a great first day of work! We spent the morning working at Iglesia Del Camino and the afternoon with children.

We've Arrived!

Ready to leave for the airport
Left to right: Beth, Laurie, Ellen, Brenda, Crickett, Mary Jo, Bill and Jenna

Saturday we arrived in Antigua after flying into Guatemala City around 2:00 pm. We settled into our hotel and then Pastor Mike from Iglesia Del Camino took us on a walking tour of the town. Later, we ate dinner at our hotel with Pastor Mike then began getting all our supplies for our children's program sorted and ready to go!

This morning we went to Iglesia Del Camino for their worship service where Brenda and Laurie (with translation help from Emmy) had the privilege of teaching 30 6-12 year old girls in Sunday School. The majority of the girls were from a local orphanage.

Later in the afternoon we visited "El Mercado" which is Antigua's marketplace. Steve's (one of our hosts from Iglesia Del Camino) wife Jessica gave us some insights on the process of purchasing food for the family.

Following our visit to the marketplace, we went to a homeless shelter to serve dinner. The shelter is run very similar to a shelter in the United States. There are two separate section, one for families and one for men with substance abuse. We also had the opportunity to visit with them and provided them reading material about the gospel, which was very well received.

Pray With Us

Your prayer support is essential to our team, as we seek God’s guidance and protection over us. Please also pray for the people of Guatemala, that they will be open and receptive to our message of Christ’s love for them.

Please pray for...
  1. Safety and health while traveling and throughout the week.
  2. God will open the hearts of the people in Guatemala and on our team.
  3. We will be open to serve where God wants us and be open to what He wants to teach us.
  4. Team unity

DBC's First Guatemala Team!

Dunwoody Baptist Church is sending it's first team to Guatemala this spring! We will be serving alongside Iglesia Del Camino (Church of the Road) in Antigua, which is about 45 minutes outside of Guatemala City.

First and foremost, the reason for sending this team is to share the love of Jesus Christ with the people of Guatemala, but this will be a scouting trip for opportunities that our church may wish to engage in the future. Our team will be doing a variety of things, such as:
  • Providing light construction work at the church
  • Building a house in a neighboring Mayan community
  • Providing a children’s program in the community where we will be building
  • Visiting an orphanage and/or a mal-nutrition center
  • Participating with church activities at Iglesia del Camino
  • Sharing with members of the Antigua Tourist Police Force
